Scientific Apparatus Mystery-Day 104

Our friend, Richard, is the most amazing hunter of treasures in resale shops and estate sales, and the shop owners are quick to spot and reserve the most unusual pieces for him because of his appreciation of interesting old finds!  This mystery item is one of his more recent acquisitions!  Such a puzzle for many of us who have tried to identify the name of this item and the purpose for it!  These are some of the identifiers located on the apparatus:

  • E.F. Rose Mfg. Co.
  • Scientific Electric Apparatus
  • Los Angeles, CA
The attachments seen in the bottom of the picture are glass, and the entire unit is encased in a beautifully stained wood.  Can anyone provide any clues or details about its' use?  I'm thinking my dad will know exactly what this is so I'm eager to hear his response to this blog entry!   Anyone else have any ideas?

  1. ok, i can't tell what it is - maybe an antique dialysis machine?

i think i found information on the inventor, Edgar J Rose, who has applied for many patents. the wording on one of his patents - the High-Tension Discharge Apparatus begins like so:
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, EDGAR J ROSE, a citizen of the United States residing at Los Angeles in the county of Los Angeles and State of California have invented a new useful High Tension Discharge Apparatus of which the following is a specification...

  2. Richard hasn't met me yet. You should see some of the stuff I've found. Btw, It's a quack shock therapy machine, specifically designed to take suckers money. A cure all by emitting electro shocks to the body. The attachmensts are for different areas of the body. The one shaped like a rake is for scalp and hair stimulation. The other for another area of the body. You get the idea. Here's a link to the E.J. Rose unit like Richard's I just cleaned up, and sold on ebay to a scientist in california. Mine was in near mint condition with just a little tlc. http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-1920s-E-J-ROSE-QUACK-DIATHERMY-MEDICAL-ELECTRO-SHOCK-MACHINE-MUSEUM-PIECE-/111004329867?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d85fa78b
